"Roughly one third of the food produced in the world for human consumption every year — approximately 1.3 billion tonnes — gets lost or wasted." -- FAO, May 2011
FoodBank SA's Food Rescue program connects the world of waste to the world of want.
FoodBank SA rescues food that would otherwise be lost or wasted, and gives it to those who need it most -- our agencies.
Our Food Rescue program entails putting to good use huge volumes of food which is rescued or donated thanks to the support of many of the country’s major food manufacturers and retailers. Rescued and/or donated food which is within the expiry date period is received by the appropriate FoodBank warehouse, where branding is defaced and the food is sorted and packaged in line with the needs and specifications of the various agencies supported by the food bank.
It costs just R1 to rescue food worth R6.
